Kilifi has one big advantage over most other coastal resort areas. Its creek is a large expanse of inland water, spanned by the new bridge and just forty miles north of Mombasa. For those keen on watersports, there is no rough, windy season when boats come out of the water, and you can water-ski, sailboard, sail a dinghy and explore the remote beaches in a small motorboat, easily launched at the old ferry ramps, all year round. There is an internationally famous yacht marina, where ocean-going yachts from all over the world call, several hotels, both in the creek and on the sea front, restaurants, banks and shopsyet the area is still unspoiled by mass tourism and has that old Kenya charm of a bygone era. Access by air is easy, from the International Airport at Mombasa, or from Malindi Airport with it's regular flights from Nairobi, and the road is tarmac from both. There are private airstrips both sides of the creek. |
